Friday 9th May 2014

I feel sick.

I received an e-mail offering me a job yesterday and last night I was given enough proof to convince me that the whole thing is a fake.  Oh the website looks OK and they put across some very good reasons why I should take the job...but the company uses practices that seem a little off to me and it also appears on a scam warning website as being reported for fraud.

The job seemed a little too good to be true anyway but this has really upset me because it would have meant financial security for me with a healthy income and working hours that were short enough for me to be able to continue to pursue my personal interests.

I suppose I should have expected this kind of thing when I uploaded my CV to a number of job search websites but I was foolish to think that, if I did everything I could to show I’m trying to everything I could to get a job, I might actually get genuine job offers.  However, what has happened is I have become more depressed because of the lack of jobs I am either qualified/have enough experience in or are close enough for me to get to because of the lack of funds for travel.

The only high spot from yesterday was the fact that I started a new blog called Voice of the Resistance with an entry acting as a call to arms for the citizens of the UK to try to bring about the removal of the current Government and the institution of radical political change.  It is both gratifying and depressing that the first posting on that blog actually got more views in one day than the last four postings on this blog have in total.  It means that people are prepared to read my work and like it, judging from the comments I have received on Facebook, but that this blog is left unread by all but a loyal few.

Perhaps this is an indication that mental health is still too taboo a subject for people to want to engage with.  I know this blog happens to be rather downbeat but that’s the nature of a blog about my personal experiences of suffering with depression.  I cover other topics too but it seems that no one is willing to read them even when I go to great pains to re-post links to the entries.

If anyone’s interested in reading my new blog, you can find it here: http://voiceoftheresistanceuk.blogspot.com/

Wednesday 7th May 2014

Just barely got myself energised enough to climb out of my duvet on the sofa and come to the computer to do some stuff.

I’ve got a Governor’s meeting at the adult college tonight but I don’t really feel up to going.  Unfortunately, I’ve already missed two meetings lately so I can’t in all good conscience miss any more.  The ideas I proposed for the new Governor Mentorship scheme are on the agenda which makes it even more important that I’m there so I will have to simply do what I must to drag myself there.  I also can’t send my apologies with the excuse of “I’m not really up to attending because of the state of my mental health” on the very day of the meeting because that would be rude, even if it is true.

It also shows potential employers that, although my mental health may be poor at the moment, I’m still prepared to drag my fat ass out of the flat to do what needs to be done.  This is an important statement to make seeing as how I am presently looking for work having been kicked off the benefit I was claiming despite being in a worse shape than when I first claimed it and left with no income whatsoever.

I posted my first movie review on my other blog yesterday.  It’s been a long time since I set it up and I felt the urge to write something that wasn’t mental health, politics or yet another diary entry.  I doubt it’ll get many views but at least I can post the links on my social networking sites and hope that people will see that I’m not all doom and gloom or piss and vinegar.  It would be nice if it got me a job as a reviewer although the review doesn’t go into the sort of minute detail that some do.  All I want to do is give people a flavour of what a film is like and a reason for them to check it out for themselves.  I’m not after doing some deep critical analysis, just a good old-fashioned recommendation.

I may not be reviewing new movies but that is because there are very few new movies that aren’t already hyped up to the eyeballs or are any good.  I just want to go through my collection of DVDs picking out the ones that are fascinating, original or just plain good and try to enthuse other movie buffs to watch them.  It’s a vain hope but I’ve got to do something to pass the time while I’m waiting to get a job or die (whichever comes first), haven’t I?

The review I mentioned can be found here:

Monday 5th May 2014

Things really aren't going well for me at the moment.  I can't see anything changing for me despite my efforts.  All I can see is me getting more isolated and losing what little human contact I have in the real world.

I started writing a review for my other blog, Valen's Vault From The Abyss, last night and I'm hoping to finish it tomorrow because I've been asleep most of the day. I've barely been able to keep my eyes open for no reason in particular just the regular tiredness brought on by years of depression.

I'm so down I can barely work up the energy to write any more for this entry so I'll sign off now.

Sunday 4th May 2014

I've been awake all night and the headache that remains a constant companion to me has gotten worse.

I have very little to look forward to and very little to hope for despite trying my best to alter the downward direction my life is taking.  It seems as though doing everything by the book has done nothing but backfire on me and I am left to be haunted by the spectre of trying to do the right thing and the memories of the damage done to my life.

Even when I acknowledge the mistakes I have made, I am penalised by those who believe they can do no wrong.  I am seemingly held to a higher standard and treated harshly when I fail to meet those standards.  Some would call that unfair.  Some might call that discriminatory.  Some might call that victimisation.  Not, however, those who stand in judgment over me.

I have done everything expected of me to justify my benefit payments and yet they have been stripped from me too.  My health issues have not gone; they have, in fact, worsened as my mental health issues are joined by further physical health issues that both cause a physical deterioration in my body but also negatively affect my mental health.

I look for work that I know in my heart I'm not ready to undertake but knowing full well that I have no choice in the matter.  My search for work is further complicated by the fact that I have been out of the job market for almost nine years and there is still too much stigma surrounding mental ill-health and no amount of anti-discrimination legislation will improve my chances because none of it is fully enforced and there are too many ways around compliance.

I have been regretting allowing the stranger who stopped me committing suicide from going through with my plans as the glimmer of hope the stranger represented turned out to be nothing but another false hope.  I am in physical pain and emotional pain and I see no end to either.

Link to my Time To Change blog

I was recently accepted as a blogger for the UK's Time To Change campaign, an anti-discrimination, anti-stigma campaign for people with mental health issues.  My first blog entry was added on Monday this week and has already attracted attention on the Time To Change website and their Facebook page.  Below are links to my blog and the Time To Change Facebook page:

Why we should care for our animal friends

I was set the task of writing about being a good pet ‘owner’ by some friends on Facebook so I have decided to write a little about why I think we have a duty to our animal friends in a civilised society.

Let us be entirely clear about this – if you take custody of an animal as a pet, you have a duty to care for that pet to the best of your ability for the rest of its natural life.

There are some pets, like cats and dogs, who choose their ‘owners’ by coming up to prospective ‘owners’ and making that person fall in love with them.  In my own case, when I first went to buy a cat from an owner whose cat had recently had a litter I really wanted the female kitten.  She was long-haired and the most gorgeous silvery-grey you have ever seen but she wanted none of it.  It was her brother who came up to me and lovingly rubbed himself against me.  At that moment, he was my companion and my friend.  I called him Merlin and he’s lived with me for 16 years as my constant companion, friend and, although this may sound very strange, my son.

Merlin has annoyed me, scratched me and ignored me at times but when it counts, when I’m sad or feeling alone, he’s always been there for me.  In some ways, he’s been better than any human friend I’ve ever had because he’s never turned his back on me so, in return, I have always ensured that his health and well-being has had priority even over my own.  He has cost me thousands in veterinary bills but you can’t put a price on the unconditional love I get from my beloved cat.

The same applies to any animal who chooses you to live with – there should be no price you are not willing to pay to protect their life and health.  You should play with them, stroke them and love them with all your heart because they’ll return the favour in spades.

Even the animals who don’t choose you as their ‘owner’, such as hamsters, birds, and lizards, deserve nothing less than the best food you can afford, the best home to live in and the best treatment you can afford.  In my own case, my wife and I have been the proud owners of a number of rescued hamsters for whom we have spent a small fortune getting them the best habitats to live in and the best food and treats.  We have also done whatever was necessary to extend their short lives, no matter the cost, as long as they would not suffer as a result of keeping them alive.  We paid £70 for an operation to save one hamster, Fluffy, when she fell ill.  She unfortunately died under the anaesthetic because the illness was more invasive than was first thought but we willingly paid for the operation for the one chance in a million that she might survive and live for a little longer.  We could have had her euthanized for £20 or so and replaced her with a new hamster for about £10 but we felt a duty to try to save her regardless of the low chance of success.  We also spent a whole night trying to save the life of another hamster, Rocky, when we found that part of her bowel had become prolapsed.  We were unable to take her to the vet because they were shut and the emergency vet was too far away for us as we had recently lost our car.  We were told by the emergency vet to keep the piece of protruding bowel moist overnight as it may have been possible to reinsert it the next day.  We kept the piece of bowel lubricated and we bottle fed water to Rocky all night in the hope that we could save her but when we got her to the vet the next day it became apparent that the loss of blood was too great and she died.  In Rocky’s case, we kept up our ministrations all night only because she appeared to be in no distress otherwise I would have taken it upon myself to end her suffering by my own hand rather than watch her suffer needlessly.

Strange as it may be to say this but all of my ‘pets’ are seen not just as members of my family that I ‘own’ but are seen as my sons and daughters and, as such, it is my duty as a parent to care for them to the best of my ability, regardless of the expense.

We should look after the animals in our care because it is the civilised thing to do and because, as humans, we have a duty to look after the creatures that are otherwise defenceless.  Our pets are totally dependent on us to look after them when they are ill or hungry because they can’t cure their own ills and most pets can’t go hunting on their own.

Pet ownership is a sacred duty and a privilege that too many people fail to appreciate.  There are so many horror stories about abuse of pets or the use of torturous devices to ensure an animal’s compliance that I have to question whether we live in the civilised society we supposedly live in.

Surely, how we treat our animal friends says a lot about us as a species and isn’t it right that we give the right impression of our species by taking care of the animals in our charge?  Any less is disingenuous if we claim to be truly civilised.

Friday 2nd May 2014

In the past week I have done what I have been able to find work but there isn’t a lot around that I am 1) qualified for, 2) have experience in, or 3) is in walking distance of home as I don’t have any money for fares.

Last Friday I put in my CV for two part-time jobs at Lakeside Shopping Centre but haven’t heard anything yet.  A couple of days ago I joined three job search websites and uploaded a new version of my CV for prospective employers to look at as well as applying for a job with my local council.  Yesterday I put my CV in for work as a potential tutor at the temporary campus in my town as I was told the day before that they were looking for tutors for the Functional Skills courses by someone who works there.  I’m not sure if the person on the other end of the phone said something funny to the receptionist or not but she laughed as she was looking at me so I’m assuming that I won’t get anything there despite having a higher qualification than some of the teaching assistants they were approaching to fill the shortfall in candidates for the tutor jobs.

I’m feeling quite depressed about the whole thing as I’ve been receiving ‘Jobs By E-Mail’ search results to my inbox but there’s nothing that’s applicable for me because they are either too far away (and not just a bus ride either but the other end of the country) or I don’t have the required qualifications or experience.

I suppose I could go back to writing for Your Thurrock but, as I don’t get paid for it, what's the point?

I received a very upsetting phone call from someone at the university I did some lecturing at and that has just pushed me closer to the brink I was only just pulled back from a couple of weeks ago.  Perhaps I should have just given up despite the hope that brought me back from the brink.  All I know is that I’m just two steps away from the Abyss again.
